Computational biology, bio-informatics and biometrics

This research area applies computational models and techniques to important and difficult biological problems, such as the use of machine learning techniques to predict protein properties (such as subcellular localization, membrane protein topology, PTMs, etc.), the effect of mutations on protein structure and function, and protein structures from amino acid sequences. In systems biology we are concerned with defining languages for specifying bio-chemical systems capable of appropriately modeling complex biological interactions, defining theoretical models to be used as references for symbolic biology applications, and
design efficient algorithms to simulate and analyze different biological systems. At the same time, DISI research deals with computational frameworks that try to mimic the way nature and living beings solve cognitive-perceptual tasks and are able to learn and self-organize.
