Networks, middleware, distributed and mobile systems

DISI carries out several research activities, both theoretical and applied, in the macro-area of distributed systems, cloud computing and middleware supporting highly efficient and scalable distributed services. The activities range from the sub-fields of
efficient management of distributed resources, to the development of context-aware distributed services, from middleware support for quality of service and location/context-awareness, to parallel and distributed simulation, from adaptive distributed multimedia systems
to content delivery networks. Regarding the activities on cloud computing, DISI is engaged in addressing many related technological challenges that are still unresolved in the literature and/or far from consolidated industrial-grade solutions, such as

  1. design of middleware architectures for dynamic configuration, management and optimization of resources and services on cloud;
  2. Algorithms and mechanisms for reducing energy consumption and optimizing resource utilization on datacenters;
  3. Optimized plans for dynamic allocation and migration of virtual machines, including heterogeneous ones;
  4. Dynamic federation of heterogeneous cloud systems;
  5. online stream processing with high scalability and quality-aware based on Map&Reduce-like techniques.
